Learning resources has so many great fun and educational products. I was very happy when they were happy to participate in #ABE3 in the "Its All Fun and Games" package. So then came the task of picking a great game to include. It was a difficult task and had to send over a couple of choices. I was happy when they decided to send the Alphabet Marks the Spot game.
Alphabet Marks the Spot includes a large 4.5' Vinyl mat. On the mat are all the letters of the alphabet, some of them are on there twice. It reminds me of a twister game, but with letters instead of colored spots. There are 5 inflatable cubes that are illustrated with different items that begin with all the letters of the alphabet. The game also includes place markers and an activity guide. The activity guide features 8 different ways to use the game and the skill that is used.
This game was actually first opened by John and Jayden while I slept in one morning. I came out to them tossing the cubes and finding the letters that that object began with. I joined the fun. Each of us would toss a cube identify the object, decide on the beginning letter and then search for the letter on the mat. Jayden had a great time with this game and wanted to play all morning. John and Jayden also came up with just playing with the cubes. John would toss one to Jayden and he would kick or hit it and then identify the object. I wasn't as excited about this use of the game as I didn't want it to break. But they were gentle and we added in that he needed to identify the beginning letter by the sound. He would even run over to the mat and pointed it out on the mat.
Jayden knew most of his letters and easily identified the objects on the cubes, but was just starting to learn letter sounds. That is exactly what I was looking for. Jayden will be able to work on his letter sounds in a fun, whole body way. Additionally this mat also encourages large muscle development. I really like that the game has many different options for play and different skills. This game is for ages 5-8 and I can see children using this for that long with all the different ways to use it.

ReplyDeleteI am also starting to teach my daughter the letter sounds. She knows all her uppercase letters and most of the lowercase but only knows a handful of sounds. She has a hard time sitting down for long like most barely 5 year olds and loves to learn actively.
