Back to School: Skill Sharpeners Math & Phonics Fun and Crayola Artist Studio: Rock Painting Review and Giveaway

This year Jayden has moved into 1st grade.  He is so excited and enjoying it so far.  But during the summer I wanted some activities to prepare him for the switch as well as entertain him.  Being home for the summer kids, especially mine, need things to do.  So to help Jayden prepare for 1st grade and enjoy some artistic activities I received a couple of great books from Silver Dolphin.

The first book kit I received is the Skill Sharpeners Math & Phonics Fun: Grade 1.  The set is full of fun and educational activities.  It follows along with the Common Core State Standards for first grade which our schools follow.  The set includes 3 different activity books for math and phonics practice.  There is a handful of unifix cubes (great for counting and measuring, addition match cards, word family bingo game, and practice clock.  Jayden loves the clock and its made by one of our favorite stores Learning Resources.

We tried a few of the fun math games and used the unifix cubes to measure.  they are also great for counting, addition, and subtraction.  We used the phonics book to do some phonics match games.  The match game was fun to do the matching and they are double sided so you can do it with numbers or pictures.  We played against each other in the word family bingo game.  Jayden won twice! This is a great set, there is so much that Jayden can learn using this set. I really think the word family bingo helped Jayden with sounding out the words to decide if they are words or not.  This set has so much to help build skills in addition, subtraction, story problems, measurement, telling time, long and short vowels, nouns, and verbs, and reading comprehension.

The second book I received is the Crayola Artist Studio: Rock Painting. With this book you can turn any rock into a one-of-a-kind creation.  All you have to do it pick a rock, paint, color, and decorate it with the included embellishments.  The book has really easy step by step directions to help kids make a fun rock.  There are 48 pages in the book, 18 washable crayola kids paint, 5 crayola glitter glue tubes, 1 paint brush, 10 pom-poms, and a paint palette.  There are more than 15 cool rock projects kids can make.

Jayden was super excited about this one.  If he had his way he would paint every rock in our front yard, and we have desert landscape with all rocks.  He has painted a lady bug, a football, and a frog so far.  He wants to do more, but I am trying to slow him down so he doesn't use it all up or all our rocks.  The instructions are really easy to follow with clear pictures on each step.  Jayden was excited with the extra items like glitter glue and pom-poms.  After he finished his rocks he added a little bling with the glitter glue and pom-poms.  He was so excited after the first time we did it that he had to take them to school and show his teacher.  There is plenty of paint to last for many rocks for sure.

Both of these items are great for learning and for keeping boredom at bay.

  17. The transition period, aka summer, is a great time to learn new skills, especially if this type of learning is done with games and paint! :) We use to do something similar to this ever year with our children and always saw great results from it.
